QUIET NIGHT IN SERBIA, FIRES BURNING IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS IN MONTENEGRO, WHILE IN NORTH MACEDONIA FIRE IS SPREADING TOWARDS NATIONAL PARK

BELGRADE/PODGORICA, AUGUST 31 /SRNA/ - The fire on Stolovi has not been brought under control, but the situation is better than in previous days, and the night in the Deliblato Sands passed peacefully, with no new hotspots reported.

Light rain fell intermittently throughout yesterday and overnight in several areas, but firefighting teams remain on alert, according to Belgrade-based media.

The situation in Lukovo near Vranje has improved, but the fires are still not under control. The fire in the Sjenica area, near the village of Kozik, remains out of control.

The Russian Ilyushin firefighting aircraft made a total of five sorties yesterday to help extinguish fires in Serbia.

In Montenegro, the highest number of fires was reported in the Nikšić area, while active fire sites were also recorded in Podgorica, Danilovgrad, Kolašin, Cetinje, Šavnik, Plužine, Mojkovac and Bar.

Montenegro’s Interior Ministry aircraft carried out 14 sorties during the day, dropping 72 tonnes of water over fire-affected areas across the country, Vijesti reported.

In North Macedonia, the fire advancing towards Pelister National Park remains the most difficult and complex to extinguish. Ground forces, heavy machinery, air tractors and a military helicopter are involved in efforts to contain it, said Stojanče Angelov of the State Forestry Service.
