PERA TODOROVIĆ - POLITICIAN AND PUBLISHER

BIJELJINA, MAY 1 /SRNA/ - Serbian journalist, writer and politician Pera Todorović /1852-1907/, one of the founders of the People's Radical Party and the most prominent journalists of his time, was born on May 2, 1852.

Todorović was close to the champion of Serbian socialists Svetozar Marković and edited a number of newspapers and magazines, including the socialist newspaper Rad.

He started the newspapers Samouprava and Radikal, and between 1889 and 1903 he published Male Novine, the first informative and sensationalist newspaper in Serbia.

Todorović was a volunteer in the Serbian-Turkish war of 1876 and 1877, and after that he emigrated to Hungary and published the socialist newspaper Straža in Novi Sad with Lazar Paču.

After returning to Serbia, he was sentenced to death over the Timok Rebellion, which was raised by radicals in the Zaječar region against the regime of King Milan Obrenović in 1883, but was pardoned.

Todorović then reconciled with King Milan and advocated an agreement between the radicals and the people movement followers, which is why the radicals excluded him from the party.

In literature, Todorović mostly dealt with historical topics and he translated the Russian writer Nikolai Gavrilovich Chernyshevsky. His works are "The Diary of a Volunteer," "Descent from the Throne" and "Karađorđe".

Pera Todorović died in 1907.
