BELGRADE, APRIL 27 /SRNA/ – A decision by the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals in the Hague on a request for General Ratko Mladić to be urgently released for medical treatment in Serbia has not yet been made, but his family hopes it will be issued as soon as possible given his serious health condition, general's son Darko Mladić told SRNA.

Darko Mladić assessed that release for treatment would be appropriate given the severity of the general's condition, which now meets the criteria set last summer by Mechanism President Graciela Gatti Santana.

"She said: 'Acute terminal condition'. That was the requirement. Both our doctors and theirs agree that this is now the case. That was the condition under which he was not released last summer", Darko Mladić said.

The family of General Ratko Mladić and his lawyer Dragan Ivetić submitted a request to the Mechanism on April 23 for his urgent release for treatment in Serbia due to his extremely serious health condition.

The Mechanism has no mandatory deadline to decide on the request.

General Ratko Mladić suffered a stroke on April 10 and his condition has further deteriorated, with serious neurological, cardiovascular and renal problems.

Former commander of the Main Staff of the Republika Srpska Army, General Ratko Mladić has been in the detention hospital in the Hague since 2024, where he is receiving palliative care due to his severe condition.

The Mechanism has previously rejected several requests for his provisional release for treatment in Serbia.
