BIJELJINA, MAY 29 /SRNA/ – During the NATO bombing campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, NATO aircraft destroyed the bridge over the Velika Morava River near Varvarin on May 30, 1999, killing 11 civilians.
Among those killed was 16-year-old Sanja Milenković, regarded as one of the world’s most talented young mathematicians.
Also killed in the attack was Archpriest-Stavrophor Milivoj Ćirić, the first victim of NATO aggression within the clergy of the Serbian Orthodox. He was killed near the entrance of the nearby Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God.
The attack occurred at a time when the bridge was crowded with people due to market day.
