UNIVERSITY LIBRARY IN BELGRADE OPENED IN 1926

BIJELJINA, MAY 23 /SRNA/ – The University Library in Belgrade, whose construction began in 1921 with the help of the Carnegie Endowment and was completed in 1924, officially opened its doors on May 24, 1926.

It was the first building in Serbia specifically constructed to serve as a library. In 1946, it was named the Svetozar Marković University Library.

It serves as the central library for university, higher education, and scientific research institute libraries and institutions in central Serbia, specifically in the Belgrade area.

Additionally, it is the central library for the administrative districts of Mačva, Kolubara, Podunavlje, Braničevo, Šumadija, Pomoravlje, Bor, Zaječar, Zlatibor, Moravica, Raška, Rasina, Nišava, Toplica, Pirot, Jablanica, and Pčinja.

The library supports the educational and scientific needs of students, university professors, and researchers.

Upon its founding, the library's collection consisted of 57,254 publications, both monographic and serial. Today, it holds more than 1,700,000 publications.
