BIJELJINA, APRIL 5 /SRNA/ - The European Community, the predecessor of the EU, recognized the independence of BiH on April 6, 1992, which had been proclaimed by the pro-Muslim government in Sarajevo following an illegal referendum.
The recognition was announced on the same day that Sarajevo was liberated from Nazi and Ustashe - Home Guard forces in 1945, and also on the anniversary of the day Nazi Germany attacked the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and bombed Belgrade in 1941.
In addition to the provocative date, the EU also accepted assurances from Muslim leader Alija Izetbegović that he would sign the plan proposed by Portuguese diplomat José Cutileiro, which envisioned the cantonization of BiH along ethnic lines in exchange for recognition of independence.
In testimony before the Hague Tribunal, Cutileiro accused Izetbegović of lying and of being the main culprit for the outbreak of the war in BiH.
