BRČKO, JUNE 28 /SRNA/ – Brčko District Mayor Siniša Milić said, following comments and threats of physical violence directed at him on social media, that differing opinions and identities must not be a cause of division but rather the foundation of coexistence.
The insulting comments aimed at Milić, including calls for his "legs to be broken", followed the publication of an article on the Brčanski Forum portal criticizing him for displaying the flag of Republika Srpska in the city park during the Baby Conference event.
Milić explained that the event was officially sponsored by the Republika Srpska Ministry of Family, Youth and Sports and stressed that no one should be disturbed by flags or any other national symbols.
He emphasized that a society's ability to accept different symbols without fear or hostility is the true measure of a community's maturity.
Milić pointed out that the future of the community must be based on cooperation, solidarity, and tolerance, while debates on this issue are persistently fueled by self-appointed online moralizers and politically marginalized individuals whose aim is to undermine tolerance.
He said that such inappropriate behaviour represents a very small minority on all sides in the District, concluding that Brčko should be the capital of tolerance in BiH and a place where the principle of "live and let live according to one's own beliefs" is consistently upheld.
